Teaching Sexual Health to Young People: Parents and Educators

As a clinical sexologist, educational psychologist, and a parent myself, I know that teaching sexual health to young people is an important but challenging task. It's important to provide accurate information in a way that is both engaging and age-appropriate. Here are some tips for teaching sexual health to young people:

  1. Start early. The best time to start teaching sexual health is when children are young. This gives them time to learn about their bodies and healthy relationships in a safe and supportive environment.

  2. Be honest and open. Use clear and accurate language when talking about sex. Avoid euphemisms and slang terms that children may not understand.

  3. Be age-appropriate. Tailor your teaching to the age and maturity level of your child. For example, you may want to focus on basic anatomy and sexual reproduction with younger children, and discuss more complex topics such as consent and contraception with older children.

  4. Be positive. Sex can be a beautiful and healthy part of life. When you talk to your children about sex, make sure to emphasize the positive aspects of healthy relationships.

  5. Answer questions honestly. If your child asks a question about sex, be honest with them. Don't try to avoid their questions or give them vague answers.

  6. Be a role model. Children learn by watching the adults in their lives. Make sure you are setting a good example by practicing healthy sexual behaviors yourself.

  7. Always be respectful. Yeah, somethings kids say the funniest things ever, but do not mock or blow out of proportion what they are sharing or asking about.

  8. Remember, saying nothing is saying something! Keeping quite and never bringing it up sends the message of the topic being taboo. Even though you might feel they should be comfortable enough to come to you when they have a questions, you showing initiative and showing comfort with the subject is what lets them know it is OK to ask questions, be curious, and feel those feelings…
