Keeping it Good in Long-Term Relationships

Many feel sex is a vital part of a healthy relationship. Yet, just as many are unsatisfied with their sex life. It's nearly impossible to have mind-blowing sex every single time. After years of doing it with the same person, in the same places, likely following the same routines, it's hard to keep "it" alive and well... Add life transitions, sharing responsibilities, and the changes that come with aging. Are we doomed?

Good Enough Sex

The Good Enough Sex model is a concept that encourages couples to let go of idealized expectations. It helps couples combat this issues and offers a sex positive approach to sexual dysfunction. Here are a few starter points:

1. Discuss realistic expectations. Desire and performance fluctuate.

2. Nurture your relationship. Emotional closeness may lead to more satisfying experiences.

3. Communicate openly your sexual needs, desires, and boundaries.

4. Explore and experiment with different sexual activities, techniques, and fantasies that you both find pleasurable (or are curious about!).

5. Focus on pleasure, let performance and specific goals go.

6. Desires and needs change. Be flexible and adapt to accommodate each other.

7. Address the impact of stress and other life factors on sexual desire and functioning.
